A Dark-eyed Junco perched on the Hummingbird Tree …

… same tree, different focus …

Rufous Hummingbird

“And now,” he said, “would you like to see my magnificent colors from the front?”

A VERY long slideshow. I just couldn’t choose my favorites from this mornings shoot, so I included most of them. :)

The sun shone brightly this morning for a full 30 minutes at my house. I hadn’t seen the sun in so long I had to look it up on Wikipedia to find out just what the heck it was.

I love morning and evening light the best. When the sun is hanging low in the sky everything just seems to sparkle a bit more … even me.

My juncos love their millet …

… and their Nut Butter Treatballs.

They’ll even brave the wind and rain for a good (corn) meal.

I love the “sports” setting on my Nikon.
What else would capture the moment so quickly?
Poo.

My Carolina friend, Dr. M., wrote this little ditty for me and Poo. Sing it to the tune of “Puff, the Magic Dragon.”

Poo, the Dark-eyed Junco, lived in a tree,
and frolicked on the old back porch
of a girl named Kimberly!

The Song Sparrow flew in and landed precariously on the branch sticking out of the frozen pond.

Then, to his delight, he discovered that he could walk on water …

I watched him skate around the pond for about 10 minutes. I got tired of watching him long before he became tired of playing.

Wheeeeee! Song Sparrows are known for their brave and curious natures. Quite unlike the more timid Dark-eyed Juncos …

This little guy is NOT going to trust the waters yet.

It’s a cold day. Snow flurries have been flying off and on all day long. I mixed up a new batch of Peanut Buttery Treatballs for my friends. Their favorite!

Mix one part each peanut butter, Crisco, flour and three parts cornmeal. Set it out and watch it disappear.

That is Mount Saint Helens in the background. I love capturing birds on the wing … as maybe you can tell from the title of this blog, “on the wing.”
