The grosbeaks have been here for a couple of weeks — the men a week earlier than the ladies, actually — but they have been pretty camera shy. I’ve finally captured a few shots of what is one of my all-time favorite birds.

The odd way they cock their head when something peaks their curiosity is charming, but at the same time it’s a little eerie — they remind me of the velociraptors of Jurassic Park movie fame.

  1. Hi Kimberly,
Great photos of those grosbeaks! Look at that beak! Built for cracking sunflower seeds and such. Nice photos of both sexes for identification purposes. Ours are going through alot of seed these days, with a lot of help from the finches and squirrels 🙂 We’ve had a flicker working on the suet cage. It’s designed to keep out the bigger birds, but he/she is able to get head and beak in far enough to get a good beakful.
Sorry I was in such a hurry this AM and couldn’t have been more helpful. Hope your allergies are calming down… Blessings —-
